Welcome

to the Department of Computer Science at Southeast Missouri State University.  Our department offers the flexibility to tailor a degree to fit specific niches in today's marketplace. By customizing a degree, the student can combine computer science interests with other aspirations and interests, thus positioning the student to take advantage of expanded career opportunities that others in the field may miss.

Program Educational Objectives and Program Outcomes

The program educational objectives (PEOs) of the Computer Science and Computer Information Systems degrees at Southeast are broad statements that describe professional accomplishments that the Department of Computer Science is preparing their graduates to achieve during their career.

Specifically, the PEOs of both the Computer Science and Computer Information Systems programs are defined as preparing students to become:

1.    Recognized by their peers and superiors for their technical skills in the computing field.

2.    Recognized by their peers and superiors for their professional skills in the computing field (e.g. communication, teamwork, leadership).

3.    Actively involved in local and regional professional service.

4.    Graduate students in computer science and related disciplines.

5.    Professionals actively engaged in activities which allow for the continuous development of their computing skills.

The program outcomes (POs) of the Computer Science and Computer Information Systems degrees at Southeast are narrower statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation.  In other words, these relate to the skills, knowledge, and behaviors that students acquire in their matriculation through the degree program.

Specifically, the POs of both the Computer Science and Computer Information Systems programs are that upon graduation students will be able to:

1.   Demonstrate understanding of computer science fundamentals.

2.   Demonstrate programming proficiency in a modern language.

3.   Demonstrate fundamental software engineering skills on a non-trivial project to the satisfaction of a client.

4.   Be prepared for one of the following:

      a.   To enter the workforce as an entry level applied computer scientist.

      b.   To be accepted into a computer science graduate program.

5.   Be prepared for lifelong learning in their computer science careers.

6.   Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively.

7.   Demonstrate critical thinking skills.

8.   An understanding of professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues and responsibilities.
