Frequently Asked Questions This
page will hold frequently asked questions (FAQs) and their answers. For
now a few questions are listed. Send a question to the Department by
email if your question is not listed.
- How do I get a University
e-mail address?
- All students are assigned an e-mail
address based on their names. For example, if your name is John R.
Smith, your e-mail address will be "jrsmith1s@semo.edu". Your e-mail
address is set up on SE Keys. The assigened SE Keys e-mail addresses are
the ONLY e-mail addresses that the university will recognize. All course
announcements, financial matters, academic information items, etc. will
be distributed via your SE Keys e-mail address. The accounts are good
during your stay here at Southeast. For more information,

- How do I declare a
Computer Science or Computer Information Systems major?
- Students may stop by the Computer
Science Department (DH021A) or the College of Science and Mathematics
Advising Office (RH117) to pick up a declaration of major form. After
the form is completed, an advisor will be assigned. Students who have
not completed College Algebra are usually assigned to College of Science
and Mathematics Advising Center. Students who have completed MA134 will
be assigned to a faculty advisor in the Computer Science Department.
- How do I declare a Computer
Science or Information Systems minor?
- Students may stop by the Computer
Science Department (DH021A) or the College of Science and Mathematics
Advising Office (RH117) to pick up a declaration of minor form. The
completed form should be left at the advising center or departmental
office.
- What labs are available?
- The department maintains two labs (DH023
and DH026). DH023 is only for students taking Computer Science and
Information Systems courses. The
lab hours are
posted by the lab entrance. DH026 is a closed teaching lab and is only
open when instructors reserve the lab for class use.
Numerous open labs can be found across
campus. Lab
locations and lab hours for the current semester are available on
the web.
- What beginning computer
course should I take?
- Students interested in computer courses
have a variety to choose from. CS 120 Introduction to Computer Science
is designed to be breadth-oriented covering a number of topics in
computer science in order to provide a general idea of the scope of the
discipline. It has a MA 095 (with a C or better) prerequisite. CS 155 is
the first course in the computer science sequence. It is taught using
C++. It has a MA 134 (with a C or better) prerequisite. IS 130 is the
first course in Visual Basic programming. It also has a MA 134 (with a C
or better) prerequisite. IS 175 Information Systems I is the first
course in the Department's Information Systems sequence. It emphasizes
the use of database and spreadsheet tools to solve real world problems
and covers basic Web page development. It has only a MA 134 (with a C or
better) prerequisite and does not presume a programming background.
Students who are still unsure of which course to take are encouraged to
contact the Computer Science office for additional assistance.
- Who is my advisor?
- A list of Computer Science majors and
their advisors are posted in the department's office window. If your
name does not appear on the list, please stop by the Computer Science
office (DH021A).
- What scholarships are
available for a student majoring in Computer Science?
- A list of
scholarships for
the College of Science and Mathematics can be found on the College's web
page. You may also contact the office of Financial Aids concerning
information on other scholarships.
- How can I get more
