Frequently Asked Questions

This page will hold frequently asked questions (FAQs) and their answers. For now a few questions are listed. Send a question to the Department by email if your question is not listed.

How do I get a University e-mail address?
All students are assigned an e-mail address based on their names. For example, if your name is John R. Smith, your e-mail address will be "jrsmith1s@semo.edu". Your e-mail address is set up on SE Keys. The assigened SE Keys e-mail addresses are the ONLY e-mail addresses that the university will recognize. All course announcements, financial matters, academic information items, etc. will be distributed via your SE Keys e-mail address. The accounts are good during your stay here at Southeast. For more information, Click Here for the SE Key FAQ!

How do I declare a Computer Science or Computer Information Systems major?
Students may stop by the Computer Science Department (DH021A) or the College of Science and Mathematics Advising Office (RH117) to pick up a declaration of major form. After the form is completed, an advisor will be assigned. Students who have not completed College Algebra are usually assigned to College of Science and Mathematics Advising Center. Students who have completed MA134 will be assigned to a faculty advisor in the Computer Science Department.

How do I declare a Computer Science or Information Systems minor?
Students may stop by the Computer Science Department (DH021A) or the College of Science and Mathematics Advising Office (RH117) to pick up a declaration of minor form. The completed form should be left at the advising center or departmental office.

What labs are available?
The department maintains two labs (DH023 and DH026). DH023 is only for students taking Computer Science and Information Systems courses. The lab hours are posted by the lab entrance. DH026 is a closed teaching lab and is only open when instructors reserve the lab for class use.

Numerous open labs can be found across campus. Lab locations and lab hours for the current semester are available on the web.

What beginning computer course should I take?
Students interested in computer courses have a variety to choose from. CS 120 Introduction to Computer Science is designed to be breadth-oriented covering a number of topics in computer science in order to provide a general idea of the scope of the discipline. It has a MA 095 (with a C or better) prerequisite. CS 155 is the first course in the computer science sequence. It is taught using C++. It has a MA 134 (with a C or better) prerequisite. IS 130 is the first course in Visual Basic programming. It also has a MA 134 (with a C or better) prerequisite. IS 175 Information Systems I is the first course in the Department's Information Systems sequence. It emphasizes the use of database and spreadsheet tools to solve real world problems and covers basic Web page development. It has only a MA 134 (with a C or better) prerequisite and does not presume a programming background. Students who are still unsure of which course to take are encouraged to contact the Computer Science office for additional assistance.

Who is my advisor?
