SOUTHEAST in COSTA RICA

The Program:  Southeast has entered into a direct exchange agreement with UCR in San José, Costa Rica.  The Universidad de Costa Rica consists of the main campus in San José and eight additional regional campuses.

 

Academic Program & Calendar:  Students are required to have 2 years of Spanish study at Southeast before enrolling at UCR.  A semester at UCR offers intensive Spanish language and any other subjects students would like to study.  UCR also offers internships and graduate study.  Fall Semester is August - December; Spring Semester is February - June.

 

Room & Board:  Most students will stay with Costarricenses families within easy reach of the university.  Additional meals may be taken in the UCR cafeteria at a reasonable cost.

 

Program Costs & Scholarships:  All scholarships can be applied to this direct exchange:

                        Southeast Tuition (12 credits)         $1686 (in state)/$2916 (out of state)

                        Administration Fee                           $  250

Other costs:  Airfare, housing, books, and incidental costs are additional and will vary from student to student.  Departmental scholarships are available to help defray costs.

 

Eligibility:  Sophomores, juniors, and seniors, with a minimum overall GPA of 2.7, are eligible to apply.  Applicants must express a strong desire to learn Spanish and must be in good academic standing at the time of departure.  Spanish majors will be given preference.

 

CREDIT:  Up to 12-15 credit hours of academic work at UCR may be transferred to Southeast and recorded on the Southeast transcript.  Letter grades will be recorded on the student's Southeast transcript upon return.  Students should confer with Spanish faculty before going to Costa Rica and should return to Southeast with appropriate materials for faculty to evaluate course content, such as syllabi, written work, exams.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:  Application materials are available from the Department of Foreign Languages and must be completed by October 15th for the Spring Semester and by February 15th for the Fall Semester.  Upon receipt of the application and supporting materials, each candidate will be interviewed by the selection committee.
