Prerequisites for GO350/650 are:
- Physical Geology
- Historical Geology
- Rocks and Minerals (or courses in Mineralogy and Petrology)
Students should have had a field methods course, or have obtained the following competencies:
Basic skills
- Solve triangles with trigonometry and graphical methods
- Maintain a field notebook
- Know geologic time scale
- Identify common minerals and rocks in hand or with hand lens
- Know mineral and rock nomenclature and classifications
- Describe rocks in hand specimen and outcrop
- Measure stratigraphic section
- Familiar with structures (folds and faults), and can describe same with proper nomenclature
Brunton compass skills
- Take bearings
- Measure inclination angles
- Obtain strike and dip directly and indirectly at outcrop
- Obtain trend and plunge
- Locate points by resection and intersection
- Map traverses by compass and pace
Topographic map skills
- Determine elevations
- Interpret scales and determine distances
- Describe topographic features by reading contour lines
- Locate self on topographic map using topography and natural features
Geologic map skills
- Understand map symbols and interpret map legends
- Interpret map patterns to determine relative ages and identify common structures
A student deficient in some of these competencies should contact the field camp director to discuss the potential for success. If the director determines that success is likely, and that the student is willing to commit to the extra effort necessary to compensate for any deficiencies, the student will be permitted to enroll.
