TEXTBOOKS:
This course will emphasize critical thinking and the writing of argumentative essays. All assignments--themes, research paper, oral presentation--will require the use of pro/con arguments and informed, reasoned judgments.

A. Focus and development (5 weeks)
1. Understanding the writing process
2. Writing to be read
3. Writing under pressure
4. Peer editing
B. Writing as persuasion and argumentation
(5 weeks)
1. Reading written arguments
2. Writing and communicating on controversy
3. Writing about literature
C. Writing as communication of researched
judgments (5 weeks)
1. Writing from sources
2. The research process
BASIS FOR STUDENT EVALUATION:
A minimum of five 500-word essays,
plus appropriate revisions (50%)
One 6-8 page research paper (20%)
In-class exercises and activities (10%)
An oral presentation (10%)
Final examination (10%)
