Welcome to Intensive English Program
Our Intensive English Program (IEP) was established in 1978 to provide English language instruction for international students who desired a degree from an American university. Today, IEP continues that tradition by providing international students the academic, social, and cultural skills necessary to succeed in American institutions of higher learning. IEP responds to and supports student needs, with our vibrant Office of International Education and Services and technologically advanced curriculum. Students who meet the admission requirements of Southeast Missouri State University may gain conditional university admission through the IEP, making the transition from IEP to the university as smooth as possible.
Program Structure :
Courses are taught 25 hours per week. Before each term, new students receive special orientation to IEP and to the community of Cape Girardeau. During orientation, students are tested for English proficiency. At the end of each term, each student's progress is evaluated and students are given complete grade reports describing their progress. Academically qualified IEP students may be conditionally admitted to Southeast Missouri State University. For students who choose to transfer to another institution, Certificates of Participation are awarded and appropriate test scores will be forwarded to that institution.
Orientation :
To help students adjust to a new cultural environment, all students who enter IEP receive orientation upon arrival to campus. During orientation the structure of IEP is explained to the student, and personal needs such as transportation, banking, and shopping in the Cape Girardeau community are also discussed. Instructors hold office hours when students may visit for additional help or guidance. The on-site director is also available to assist students.
Testing & Placement :
As part of orientation, new students are tested for placement in appropriate proficiency levels. Tests are given regularly in each term, and the Institutional TOEFL is given near the end of each semester. TOEFL scores, course grades, writing ability, speaking ability, and attendance are all considered important factors in a student's academic progress.
