Stoltz-Carnahan Family Remains
Player in Missouri Politics
Brother Brian Stoltz, Delta Phi 107 and a
member of the Carnahan family, enjoyed seeing the success of his
family during the 2004 election. On Missouri’s Inauguration
Day, Robin Carnahan was sworn in as Secretary of State by
Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronnie White with her hand on a
family Bible that had been used by her father, the late Gov. Mel
Carnahan. Carnahan was killed in a plane crash in October 2000
while campaigning for the U.S. Senate seat then occupied by John
Ashcroft. Jean Carnahan, the governor's widow who later
succeeded Ashcroft in the U.S. Senate, held the Bible while
Robin Carnahan repeated the oath. United States Representative
Russ Carnahan, a former Rolla resident who took over for the
retiring Richard "Dick" Gephardt, is also the son of the late
Gov. Carnahan. “There is such an incredible sense of history
here in the Capitol and among the people who serve here,"
Carnahan said. Russ and Robin Carnahan's grandfather, the late
A.S.J. Carnahan, was sworn in for his first term in Congress in
1945. The late Richard "Dick" Ichord, of Houston, Mo.,
succeeded A.S.J. Carnahan in 1960.
