Teaching MAP Test-Taking Skills

  • Write in complete sentences.

  • Model how to answer questions.

  • Use the proper antecedent.

  • Show students examples of good responses.

  • Use transition phrases.

  • Answer all questions on the proper line.

  • NEVER abbreviate.

  • Know the vocabulary of the test.

  • Show ALL of your work.

  • Read-interpret-compare (maps, charts, graphs)
  • Use text-based details from the chart or reading.

  • Do not erase when using carbonless paper.

  • Answer ALL questions.

  • Look for clues in the reading.

  •  Explain your answers.

  • Begin and end all sentences correctly.

  • Use graphic organizers to compare and contrast.

  • Be careful when using pronouns.  Explain who "they" are before using.

  • Give specific names, details and examples.

  • Put work in correct blanks or boxes when requested.

  • Read the questions three times:

              1st:  Do a quick survey.

              2nd:  Determine what is asked.

              3rd:  Make sure you are on target.

 

 

Suggestions for the Test Day

 

 

  • Provide the least distractive environment possible for students

  • Allow the students to drink water during the test. (Use sport bottles.)

  • Practice deep breathing. (Lower abdomen should move in and out.)

  • Periodically have them use their large motor skills for increased oxygen flow.  (Have them stand up, stretch, move arms and legs.)
