Southeast Student Judicial Advocates are a group of trained volunteers who act as support for students accused of violations of the University’s
Code of Student Conduct.

The advocates are available to assist students in understanding the   procedures of University Judicial Board hearings, and the expectations of those involved in the process.

  • Student Judicial Advocates inform accused students about the University judicial process and the accused student’s rights and responsibilities as a part of the process.  If requested, advocates may also serve as an accused student’s advisor during judicial proceedings.
     

    What does a Student Judicial Advocate do?

    Student Judicial Advocates are trained to assist students in:

    • Reviewing and comprehending the elements of the judicial process

    • Advising students of their options in the judicial process

    • Reviewing reports and evidence with accused students

    • Informing students of expectations of deportment, preparation, and procedures during Judicial Board hearings

    • Discussing the rights of accused students under the Statement of Student Rights and Code of Student Conduct

    • Assisting in the calling and preparation of beneficial witnesses and evidence

    • Developing questions for referral agent witnesses and examining referral agent evidence

    • Confirming the dates and times of hearings and conferences

    • Serving as the advisor t accused students during judicial proceedings

    • Helping students understand the decisions and sanctions rendered by hearing officers

    • Collaborating in preparing judicial appeals

    How do I contact a Student Judicial Advocate?

    Student Judicial Advocates are available to all students involved in the University judicial process.

    Accused students may contact the advocacy through the Student Government Office, Office of Student Conduct or email studentadvocate@semo.edu.
     

    Participation in advocacy services is voluntary, and students may withdraw at any time.

    Student advocates are legally bound by the highest standards of confidentiality.

     Interested in becoming a Student Judicial Advocate?

    Students interested in becoming a Student Judicial Advocate should complete an application. Questions can be directed to the Office of Student Conduct or to the Student Government President. 

    Selected applicants will be required to complete a brief interview with members of the Judicial Board, Student Government, and advisors.
