Student Government is the representative body for the benefit of the entire Southeast student body. Student Government works to enhance student life by providing the student body with a communication link to the administration. SG senators meet weekly to discuss issues and concerns affecting Southeast students. The group then devises a means of communicating these concerns through proper administrative channels to ensure successful resolution. Student Government also provides support to student organizations, promotes student athletics, and provides leadership opportunities for students. Student Organization Support SG supports registered student organizations by providing funding and other assistance for programs, events, and educational and recreational activities. SG provides publicity for organizations and events via campus banners. An organization can request supplemental funding from SG through the Funding Board which is led by the SG Treasurer. The Senate regularly votes on resolutions regarding funding student organization events. The funds granted to organizations are meant to benefit the largest number of students possible. All of these services are provided free to registered student organizations. To register an organization stop by the University Center office, room 202 for the appropriate forms. Administrative Responsibility An administrative function of Student Government is the annual determination of the student activity fee. These collected fees become the base budget for Student Government. The total budget is appropriated among Student Activities Council, student organizations fund, and a student communications fund. The remaining funds support the Executive Operating Budget which includes advertising, and office expenses and Student Government payroll. Student Government also assesses an annual student athletic
fee. The total amount collected is divided between the Athletic
Department and Student Government. The funds are used by the
Athletic Department for promotion of athletic events, including
free student football and basketball tickets as well as support
for the Cheerleaders, the Sundancers and the Pep Band. Student Government's
portion of the funds supports the Athletic Promotions Board. Structure

To apply for funding, organizations must submit a budget proposal to SG the week prior to the board meeting. The organization will be asked to explain its program, budget requests and answer additional questions. The board will then deliberate on whether or not to recommend funding of the program to SG. The philosophy of SG is to fund programs, educational activities, special projects, activities and events which are held on campus and open to all students. The board consists of the Senate Finance Committee, five students at large and two alternates members who vote only when a member is absent. The board is chaired by the SG Treasurer who only votes in the event of a tie. What does SG do for you? Student Government strives to make Southeast a better place for all students. To make each year a success SG defines certain goals and projects they wish to accomplish. Leadership Experience Beyond funding organizations and determining certain fees, Student Government provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills in several different capacities. Freshman senators are interviewed and selected to serve during their first year at Southeast. Executives and non-freshman senators are elected annually in the Spring to serve for the following school year. Any student in good standing with the University can become a candidate for an executive or senatorial position. Committee chairpersons also vote in the Senate, but are appointed by the Student Government President. Student Government also may appoint ambassadors to the Faculty Senate, the Southeast Board of Regents and to 40 University standing committees.
